On the site of a demolished house, we designed a contemporary terraced house with an open spatial concept. With a southeast-facing street façade and a northwest-facing garden façade, the main challenge was ensuring sufficient daylight inside. This was solved by creating open ceilings that allow sunlight to penetrate all three floors, ensuring even the lower levels receive natural light.
The house's layout is vertically interconnected, offering an unexpected sense of openness for a terraced house. The ground floor contains a garage, a passage leading to the garden, and the main living area. The first floor serves as the children's space, with bedrooms and a bathroom. The top floor houses the master bedroom and a rooftop terrace.
Elements of the original house were preserved and integrated into the new design. Doors, chairs, and paintings from the former home maintain a link to the past, while the new wooden façade emphasizes the return of natural materials to urban housing.
This project demonstrates that terraced housing can move beyond uniformity. It explores how light, space, and materials can redefine traditional urban living.
